What You Need to Know

At Syracuse University, international education is a tradition dating back to 1919, when SU's first students went abroad to Chungking, China. In 1959, the Syracuse in Italy program opened its doors in Florence to students of all majors and at every language level. The innovative program worked: students learned language on site and the program became the model for SU centers abroad. Today, SU consistently ranks among the top-quality international education programs in the country.

Syracuse currently operates seven overseas centers, in Beijing, Florence, Hong Kong, London, Madrid, Santiago(Chile) and Strasbourg(France). New centers in Africa are under development. Through our World Partners,  Summer, and Short-Term programs, SU students have study abroad options in over 20 additional countries.

Who Studies with SU Abroad?

About 50 percent of students who study at SU Abroad centers are Syracuse students. The rest come from over 150 schools and colleges across the U.S. About 100 of these schools have agreements with Syracuse that include tuition grants and pre-approved programs and courses. A list of participating schools is available on our study abroad advisors page.

The majority of SU Abroad students are undergraduates, but SU also offers year-long, semester-long, and summer graduate programs. Graduate students make up 50 percent of SU Abroad summer enrollment.

SU Abroad Signatures

SU Abroad centers are recognized for quality academic programs across professional and liberal arts disciplines, excellent faculty, and superior student services. Each SU center is managed by an academic director and bicultural support staff, and has close ties with local universities, allowing students to design integrated programs appropriate to their academic and language abilities. Other signature features include unique field study seminars, cultural immersion through homestays, and professional internships and community engagement.

SU is also known for its diligence in all matters relating to student safety and the well-being of the whole student.
